WEB 2.0, Social Networking, and Branding

How Do We Build a List with Web 2.0, i.e. Social Networking?

What are we talking about here?  Mike Klingler wrote an outstanding eBook called How to Build a List.  Look at what Mike says about his experiences when he first learned about building a list:

But attracting quality leads for free... that sounded like a bunch of hogwash.

Now I know different. Comparing the two methods (chasing people vs. getting them to come to you) is like comparing a 1,000 mile road trip on horse back (without a saddle) vs. flying first class on a 737 Jetliner.

It's that big of a difference.

It wasn't until 2007 that I finally started to "get it."

That's when the right people, materials, emails and books were placed in front of me. That's when I started to open my mind to all this "attraction marketing" stuff and became eager to learn how to generate INTERESTED leads for free so I could then teach it to my team & clients.

It didn't take long.

Basically, Mike took the time to get involved.  He spent some time with a company that had been struggling and needed help.  He attended the meetings to see what, if anything, he could offer to the equation.

People started listening and learning.  When that company, eventually went under, Mike had built a reputation of trust and integrity that brought many of those people to himself and his business.

This is what we are trying to do through Social Networking.  We are building a relationship of trust with people who otherwise do not know who we are.  The key word here is relationship.  It does no earthly good to get a list of 10 thousand followers if you never touch base with them on a personal level.  They can't hear you....with that in mind let's look at some of the ways to touch base.

Twitter Me!Do you TWITTER?  I do and you should too, if you're looking to reach customers and team members all over the world.  "Tweeting" is a fun way to share thoughts, new blog posts, updates, funny or inspiring quotes.  It's also a wonderful way to reach people who may need a friend or some advice.   I've found direct messaging to be the best way to reach and build relationships.  This is just one of the outstanding tools available to us.

Check Out One of Mine! How about Squidoo?  This is a wonderful FREE mechanism for building single page "Shout Outs" about your business, marketing how-to's, products, and content intended to share value to the reader...funnnnnnn to do!

Depending our your use of Keywords and Content you'll rate well in the search engines and find that people are following even when you're not looking :)

HubPages is another FREE social networking site.  Similar to Squidoo in make up; it provides the end user with the tools needed to create wonderful pages full of valuable content.

All sites have rules and parameters to adhere to when writing content.  Should you get "flagged"; don't let it stop your progress.  Fix the "flagged" issue and submit it for your posting.  It's a way for them to keep checks and balances on the content flowing through their servers.  It's good policy and practice.

Check me out on FaceBook!See the little "f" on the second icon in the image?  You know what that stands for right?  Of course you do.  It's FaceBook.  One of the most popular social networking sites on the net.

Here's what you need to know about social networking.  It's not a place to SHOUT your business, opportunity, product, sales, and in general, drive people out of your life.  These are places to meet people, talk ideas, concepts, and yes, when asked share.  It's fine to post updates and such, but please don't let this be the only thing you do when socializing on the net.  The idea is to build trust and relate to people, one on one.

Attraction Marketing and Branding

Let's talk a little bit about personal branding.

Personal branding is described on Wiki-Pedia as:

Personal branding describes the process by which individuals and entrepreneurs differentiate themselves and stand out from a crowd by identifying and articulating their unique value proposition, whether professional or personal, and then leveraging it across platforms with a consistent message and image to achieve a specific goal. In this way, individuals can enhance their recognition as experts in their field, establish reputation and credibility, advance their careers, and build self-confidence.

If you follow the ABC's to personal branding you're to always promote your personal website.

Refer your "Possibility Thinkers" to your personal site rather than a company website or link.  This is an opportunity for them to personally touch the person they are considering doing business with.  This is how they will know whether you have what it takes to help them succeed in this business...whatever their opportunity.

It's a chance to develop a connection with someone that seeks to enter into the business world and opportunity.  Remember, the first thing that a prospect looks for when seeking an opportunity is YOU.  How are you represented...what does your site say about you?

Some ideas for this would be:

  • Share your mission statement, what are your goals and aspirations.
  • Write a life story; include your passions and desires for yourself and family.
  • Tell them of your experiences, good and bad...

This allows others the ability to relate to what is happening in your life versus what may have happened in theirs.

It's perfectly fine to brand systems of learning, individual leaders, along with your personal successes to complete the picture of whom you are and where you're going.  Individuals will see that you walked the walk and you're ready to share it with them.

Branding is important, but take your time...you want to get out the right message about who you are.
